For those who love spending time outdoors, few things are more frustrating than battling constant itchiness from bugs, allergens, and irritating plants.
To better understand where Americans face the worst backyard battles, we ranked major U.S. cities using five itch-related factors: seasonal allergies, pest control service availability, search interest in bug spray and poison ivy treatment, and regional poison ivy prevalence. We also surveyed 1,000 Americans about their personal experiences with outdoor skin irritants.
Whether you’re gardening, hosting a barbecue, or simply relaxing outside, knowing the itchiest cities can help you better prepare and protect your skin.
When it comes to outdoor discomfort, not all cities are created equal. We ranked 100 cities across the U.S. based on these key factors:
Each variable was carefully weighted to create the following index.
Sarasota, FL, ranked No. 1 overall as the itchiest city in our study, coming in first for pest control company listings and fourth for bug spray search interest. This Florida community is clearly invested in keeping bugs at bay.
Poughkeepsie, NY, placed second overall, ranking high for both poison ivy treatment searches and pest control access. Harrisburg, PA, Atlanta, GA, and Greenville, SC, rounded out the top five, all being hotspots for seasonal irritants and pest concerns.
Some of the itchiest cities in our index also happen to be great places for gardening. While that might seem surprising, it highlights a key point — people often embrace the outdoors even in areas where irritants are common. And in some cases, more green space can mean more exposure to plants, pollen, and pests that cause discomfort.
Poughkeepsie, for example, ranked high on both our itch index and the list of U.S. cities with the most community gardens. That means residents are finding ways to stay active and connected with nature despite the risk of irritants. The top 5 cities with the most community gardens are:
Of course, more time spent digging, planting, and harvesting also increases the chance of encountering the very irritants that landed these cities on our itch index. Wearing protective clothing, using insect repellents, and keeping an effective rash treatment on hand are smart ways to stay comfortable while enjoying all the benefits of gardening.

Beyond overall rankings, each itch factor told its own story. From pollen-packed cities to places teeming with pests, we identified the top and bottom three cities across each variable. Here’s a closer look at how different cities stack up and where itchiness might strike hardest.

Wichita, KS, proved to be the worst city for seasonal allergies, earning the highest score among the 100 cities analyzed. New Orleans, LA, and Oklahoma City, OK, followed close behind. Allergy scores considered the concentration of tree, grass, and weed pollen, medication usage rates, and the number of practicing allergy specialists in each area.
Bug battles appeared especially fierce in Sarasota, FL, Poughkeepsie, NY, and Lakeland, FL, where residents had access to the most pest control services. However, when it came to bug spray searches, St. Louis, MO, Orlando, FL, and Atlanta, GA, topped the charts, indicating their populations are frequently battling insect nuisances.
Meanwhile, Harrisburg, PA, recorded the highest per capita search volume for “poison ivy treatment,” with more than 2,500 searches per 100,000 residents. Poughkeepsie and Hartford, CT, weren’t far behind, suggesting a higher prevalence of itchy plant encounters in these areas.
At the state level, Texas, North Carolina, and Ohio emerged as hotspots for poison ivy presence. Outdoor enthusiasts in these areas should prioritize protection and quick treatment to stay comfortable and safe.
We also asked 1,000 Americans to share their backyard experiences, from the most common itch triggers to the surprising ways outdoor irritants have impacted their lives.

Mosquito bites were by far the most common backyard skin irritant, cited more often than any other nuisance. Outdoor allergies were next in line, with wasps and bees also making it difficult for many people to enjoy their time outside. More than 1 in 10 Americans (12%) said they often avoid spending time outside because of allergens, while about 1 in 5 admitted that bugs specifically kept them indoors.
Backyard irritants can cause more than minor frustrations. Over half of Americans (60%) said allergens and pests had ruined activities like gardening, barbecuing, or spending time with pets. In more serious cases, 1 in 20 had considered selling their home because of persistent outdoor problems.
From mosquitoes and pollen to poison ivy lurking in green spaces, itchiness can deeply impact how much people enjoy their outdoor areas, especially in cities like Sarasota, Poughkeepsie, and Harrisburg. Protective measures and fast-acting treatments are essential for a comfortable and enjoyable warm-weather season. No matter where you live, staying informed and prepared can help you reclaim your backyard adventures.
To identify the “itchiest” major cities in the U.S., we analyzed 100 locations across five weighted factors related to outdoor irritants. We considered each city’s seasonal allergy score from the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (weighted at 25%), the number of pest control companies per capita according to Yelp (20%), and search interest for “bug spray” and “poison ivy treatment” using Google Trends data (20% each). We also incorporated state-level poison ivy prevalence based on Western and Eastern EDDMapS (15%).
Separately, we used Yelp to gather data on the number of community gardens in each city to explore additional context around urban green spaces and potential exposure to irritants.
To complement our data analysis, we surveyed 1,000 Americans to gain insights into common backyard irritants, personal experiences with outdoor itching, and how outdoor conditions impact their activities.
